# Categorize & Autocategorize

> Assign categories to your transactions individually or in bulk using autocategorize.

Keeping your transactions categorized is the foundation of accurate financial reports. Cashflowy gives you two ways to do it: one at a time, or in bulk.

## Categorizing a single transaction

1. Go to **Banking** → **Transactions**
2. Click on a transaction to expand it
3. Select a category from the dropdown (organized by your [Chart of Accounts](/banking/chart-of-accounts))
4. The category saves automatically

## Autocategorize similar transactions

When you categorize a transaction, Cashflowy detects other transactions with the same merchant or description pattern. You can apply the same category to all of them in one click.

This is especially powerful when you first connect your bank — you might have dozens of "NETFLIX" or "UBER" transactions that all need the same category. Categorize one, autocategorize the rest.

## Bulk recategorization

Need to move a batch of transactions from one category to another? Use the bulk categorization feature:

1. Select multiple transactions using the checkboxes
2. Choose a new category
3. Apply to all selected

## Smart suggestions

Over time, Cashflowy learns your patterns. When a transaction comes in from a merchant you've categorized before, it automatically suggests (or applies) the same category.

<Warning>
  **Why this matters:** Your [Profit & Loss](/reports/profit-and-loss), [Balance Sheet](/reports/balance-sheet), and every other report depend on accurate categorization. Uncategorized transactions create blind spots in your financial picture.
